Metal Company Diamant: From Giesenkirchen to Far East Achim Schulz has discovered India as a market for his company already in 1996. Now he is sending a 67 years old consultant to the Far East.

From Giesenkirchen to India Achim Schulz, CEO of the metal company Diamant, had discovered India as a market for his company already in 1996. Now he is sending a 67 years old consultant to Far East - to push technologies of the future.

By MICHAEL BROECKER: When the hobby musician Harm Drecoll played in a band, this band would be named „Oldies but Goldies". This was his suggestion. Yet the 67 years old scientist is using his trumpet for researches only: how can the old, used housing be brought back to normal, and above all: how is the sound getting back to the housing? This the former aerospace specialist had found out using special metal fillers made by the Giesenkirchen based metal specialist Diamant

Achim Schulz, in 5th generation Managing Partner of the family owned enterprise had called back Drecoll some time ago from his retirement. „His ideas and researches are helping us, he is wasting his knowledge in retirement", says Schulz and laughs. Drecoll is now sent to India as a „consultant". The 67 year old shall till a field during his 6 weeks in India which generally is called as absolutely fit for future: the nano technology. Working with the smallest material particles has been „en vogue" for years in German R&D labs yet to a large extend it is unknown how this technology can be used in concrete working processes - for example in the metal and foundry industries. Also measuring units for the mini particles are very rare. „We want to enable mouldings in nano areas", says Schulz self-confident.

Top researchers are available for the the Diamant Consultant for his ambitious project. Professor Sangeneni Mohan, head of the Innovation Center of the Indian Technological University IISc, will organize in November a workshop to integrate nano technology in working processes. Next to Drecoll there will be experts from Europe, USA and Asia. Researchers of the RWTH Aachen and the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein shall also come and discuss with about 1000 students. Professor Mohan, working with groups like Boeing, Haniel or Microsoft, has known Achim Schulz for two years. During his visists to European countries he stopped over at the EU-Commission or DaimlerChrysler and also at the enterpise at Hontzlarstraße. „Schulz is accounted for his expertise in industries", says Mohan.

The booming medium scale Indian economy is not only convinced of Schulz' products for impregnation, repair or coatings of castings and machine elements. Diamant can also open doors for the market entering of further German machine builders. As initiator and German head of the German-Indo Research Institute Indo-German-Technology-Institute (IGIT), Schulz takes the office of an India-Expert. And that goes far beyond industrial interests „I see myself as a mediator between cultures", says Schulz.
